I gotta a few questions 'bout a 351 W into my '89 coupe. (going to carb or maybe a new project car).
What's a good donor car. I heard (from ROB) that a Crown Vic is good but I forgot what years (1981-85?). There's old vans and f-150 (?) and a bunch of cars with that motor out there. What should I look for. I'll be putting in a performance cam and porting the heads (maybe bigger valves). I really just want a motor with a solid bottom end, that burns no oil. Heads, intake, better cam and stuff can come later, just need a place to start (a.k.a. blow money). Is there a site where I could get a listing of cars that came with a 351 W ?
Also do all or any 351W's have roller cams ? Any insight would help. Anything for a few more ponies helps. If no roller cam, is it possible to put one in with out machine work ($). I would like a motor that rev's but a 351 W is inherently low rev hight torque motor. Or am I on drugs.
I really have very limited knowledge about this stuff and if you you are like me please don't post. Right know no info is better than inaccurate info.
Thanks for reading the ramble.

Just ask Mercury he will answer all

I would probably stay away from the truck or van motors because they usually run with lower compression than the cars would. I would also try to find an late 60's early 70's 351 out of a decent car. It may be harder to find but thats what id go for if your looking at getting it going as is and still having some power.

all those words and i dont know what you are asking for out of the engine. if you are gonna do a stock rebuild type thing right now, I would go to a crown vic(in the 80's) and whether it is roller or not, get either a new roller/hydraulic or flat tappet/hydraulic cam(some sort of street/strip type cam, that wont push clearance issues[the cam and also how the heads flow will be a big deal in making power....]), clean up the heads, 3 angle valve job, or replace valves, throw an rpm performer 351 intake on, a good set of headers(there are tons of 351 swap headers for foxes), and I would probably include a good set of roller rockers(whichever ratio you may be lookin at) but leave all the stock bottom end(rebuilt of course).... IMO
about the revving and makin power, it's a small block, I have seen 9000RPM stroker windsors (and easily enough non stroked windsors). they can make power anywhere, just get a cam that corresponds to where you want it to make power. IMO I would get a cam that makes it's peak between 3000 or 3500 and upwards of 6000-6500ish... I would either get a built up c-4 auto or jam a stick behind it and have some fun :wink1. not hard to do and very budget friendly.... any other questions, ask rob(mercury), I suppose I know a few things whether some owuld believe that or not :wink1, and denes(ponylegacy) is in the midst of a 408(stroked 351) build up right now....
hope this helped and you take my advice :p
oh btw, if you dont wanna go look for a windsor and are unsure of what you may be getting, check bargain finder or quick times. just as cheap as pulling your own windsor and definately easier. I have seen many in there.

idealy you would like to find an early motor.. 69 to 73.. but its one of them things your not gona get ... its to hard to find..
get one from a pasanger car and have it rebuilt..
almost any aftermaket head and she will make very nice power.
the swap requires the ignition modual from the 351, the compleate motor..
and a set of swap headers. and a your stock fly wheel should work fine

as you may have already noticed, Rob and I could work well together ideally in one of these situations.. :wink1

quicktimes is a sales/resales publication directed toward the racing community.. it's like a bargain finder with only race stuff in it... www.quick-times.com
they are free with purchase from most high performance type shops in e-town and calgary....

After looking on the internet it seems that the 351 windsor didn't come with roller cam until 94. What do you guys know about this.

not much but if you can get a roller block that way if you go to convert to roller it will be cheaper
